Celebrate Today: Champaign Music Festival. July 9 & 10, 2010
Lead by our celebration partner, the Champaign Park District, this one-of-a-kind Downtown Music Festival and birthday salute to Champaign proved to be a wonderful success with an estimate of over 20,000 visitors in attendance.
The music festival celebrations kicked-off with a Downtown Music Crawl on Friday July 9, where 15 bands played at 11 participating downtown businesses. Friday’s music crawl featured entertainment at Aroma Café, Bentley’s Pub, Boltini’s, Café Luna, Cakes on Walnut, Cowboy Monkey, Exile on Main Street, Indigo Artist Co-Op, Memphis on Main, Mike & Molly’s, and The Highdive.
The festivities moved into Saturday with a full day of musical entertainment, family fun activities and Champaign 150th commemorative item sales. Stages were set on Neil and Main St., Walnut and Chester St. and Main and Chestnut St. where 19 bands with local community ties, yet of varying musical genres, entertained visitors throughout the day. The Park District worked with media groups CU Radio, Illini Radio and The News Gazette, Inc, to sponsor the three stages. Other activities included a Champaign 150th tent with commemorative sales, a special 150th video recording and free birthday cake; caricature and face painting; a game truck; instrument petting zoo; karaoke; inflatables; street entertainers; and historical walking tours of downtown. The diverse cultures, generations and traditions of the City were represented, truly celebrating the unique nature of our community.
